a little out of place but, this is why you have a look out when using a memory orb from Murky Number Seven chapter 17.

@Harmony
Ya, my mum and dad are big Prokofiev fans IIRC. I keep wanting to get a CD or something of a lot of these classical pieces, but it's a lot harder to figure out when you have to consider not just the composition but the performance - with modern music, generally the composer and the performers are linked or the same, so (apart from live versions and covers and outtakes and demos) it's not so hard to choose a version. (That said, Renaissance's "Live at Carnegie Hall" is amazing =P)

For what it's worth, I know I've listened to a few pieces orchestrated by Karajan, and found them pretty well played.

So I just heard on the news that some woman was beaten to death with an iron skillet and pepper grinder.
Despite the tragedy, that's amusing. It's like the Swedish Chef finally snapped and killed someone.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Okay, venting time:
Fuck the AP computer science exam. It's comprised of multiple choice questions and free write ones. Both are stupid, but the multiple choice ones are stupider.
First off, most of them ask either what a certain variable will be at the end of a certain segment of code or if a piece of code will work, which is STUPID, if I wanted to know what a variable's value was, I'd just use a print line, and some of them are math questions underneath a 50-repeat loop (and you're not allowed a calculator). As for code compiling wouldn't it be smarter just to run the code? Then you can figure out what's wrong from the errors given. The multiple choice questions test no useful skills, in my opinion. Not to mention it's near impossible for me to follow a lengthy segment of someone else's code for some reason, without being able to implement it in a program I'm able to run. I guess the hardest part is loops, I can't do loops in my head.
As for the free write questions, you're suppost to write a segment of code BY HAND. Fortunately the answers they expect are quite short, and more test logic rather then actual coding knowledge, I still compare it to expecting no spelling errors from a hand written document when the person doesn't have access to a dictionary let alone a spell-checker.
Anyone else here take the exam? If so how did you do? Am I the only one who seems to find the questions stupid and near-impossible to do? No one else in my online course seems to be having my level of trouble.

RE programming exams : I feel your pain.
Good thing in my case, even the teachers themselves acknowledge how fucking stupid it is, and find workarounds to ensure we aren't shot down by these exams, like for example letting their grading be influencing by how we acted during the Practice Sessions, things like that...
In the end, the only relevant way you have to test someone's programming skills is to have them work on projects, as it involve more than just coding : it also entails modeling, writing reports, etc... All skills that WILL be useful in the professional world.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I never took an AP Compsci exam, but I, too, know how bloody stupid writing out code by hand is. For one thing, the simple fact that you are using a very different medium than the one you are used to (assuming you are learning computer science in a not-stupid way, ie not writing out code by hand) is going to screw you over SO hard. For another, you can reasonably expect to have things like autofill and formatting and basic error-catching in the program you write in, so testing to see how well you do those things is just plain dumb. If they have to do it at all, make it a simple and obvious scenario. If they can't do it then, that's a problem; if not, that's why we love our compilers.stringtheory wrote:Justified RAAAAAGE
Now, there are some things that need to be asked (conceptual things, like how arrays and sorting and stuff work), but tbh I'd much rather test people by just giving them a laptop and some code, and asking them to debug it or make it work. I know this wouldn't work with the AP format, because AP tests are ridiculous and have bought into their own hype way too much, but it'd be a lot better. Hell, just ask students to comment up some code, saying how it works and stuff, then turn in the code to be reviewed! That'd be a good way to test their knowledge.
For my comp sci final, we had an oral exam. This worked VERY well, actually, because all the questions were essentially conceptual, and the professor could ask follow-up questions to get a better idea of how well you understood the topic. Aaaanyway, yeah, right there with you on exams.

Good to hear it's not just me, though I already knew the exam was bullshit, I'm mostly bemoaning my inability to do the questions. Though I don't think you guys understand how STUPID the multiple choice questions are, here are some practice examples:
- Spoiler:
- Consider the method
public String mystery(String s)
{
String s1 = s.substring(0,1);
String s2 = s.substring(1, s.length() - 1);
String s3 = s.substring(s.length() - 1);
if (s.length() <= 3)
return s3 + s2 + s1;
else
return s1 + mystery(s2) + s3;
}
What is the output of
System.out.println(mystery("DELIVER"));
a. DELIVER
b. DEVILER
c. REVILED
d. RELIVED
e. DLEIEVR
- Spoiler:
- What is the value of n after the following code is executed?
int n = 2005;
for (int i = 0; i < 50; i++)
n = (n + 3) / 2;
a. 0
b. 1
c. 2
d. 3
e. 65

Hey everyone I have something I could use a bit of assistance with.
I'm going to be DM'ing my first campaign of D&D 4e in a few weeks and I could some advice. I have a plot lined up and several encounters planned out, but I'm kind of uncertain on how to react to the various ways everything can go off the rails. Spontaneous creativity isn't my strong point.
