Re: Snowdrop and Double Rainboom
Snowdrop was great in my opinion.
The animation could've been a tad better but it's still one of the better ones out there. And dem feels with dat music.
As for Double Rainboom, I'll let you know in 9 hours.

I'm feeling a little too lazy to dig through threads to find my review of Snowdrop, so just know that I thought it was awful.

Re: Snowdrop and Double Rainboom
I didn't like Snowdrop.
I thought the animations was okay, and the voice acting wasn't really bad.
However, the character was a pretty over used one, and it tried a bit too hard to make her cute.
It lost me when it got near the end with the story.
I can understand why people got feels at the ending, but really I didn't understand why.
In the end, I think it was just too over-hyped.
People kept bringing up the expectations for it before it was released, and I don't think it lived up to all the hype.

Anyway, it worked for me on the emotional level at least. Then again, even the ME3 ending worked for me on emotional level (the post-god-child pre-epilogue cutscene), because of the emotionally manipulative sad piano track from Clint Mansell, gotta love that OST.
Oh well, could also be that I didn't even hear about it until today, so I had no hyped up hopes ready to be crushed.

Re: Snowdrop and Double Rainboom
Okay, I really liked Double Rainboom.
I thought everyone acted in character and the voice acting was surprisingly good. The animation had a few parts that skipped (that might have been because of the live stream though). But for how long it was, and how much was going on in the backgrounds, you can tell they put a lot of work into it. (I think they worked on it for about 2 years apparently.)
I actually really liked the story, and I liked a lot of the references. (Even the really obvious ones. But they did get a bit too much at some points, but it didn't ruin it for me.)
So, yeah. I liked it, and I'm probably going to watch it again.

Oooookaaaaaay.
- comments and thoughts as I was watching:
"I've been working on this since magic kindergarten."
"I don't know what it is." HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW?! RD captured my response perfectly at that point.
Oh, but she does know what it does, she was just creating drama for no fuckin' reason.
...oh, and she doesn't even know what her friend's talents are. SOOO in character.
To be fair, the rest of her is pretty darn in character, especially the sudden "I MUST RECORD EVERYTHING"
And apparently breaking a hole in the roof destroys EVERYTHING.
The number of memes and fan-jokes made me want to burn a baby alive. Seriously, one or two is fine, but trying to cram in every single one is fuckin' retarded.
Twilight's overreactions (aka foreshadowing from hell) are annoying and extremely overdone.
And then:
HOLY OVERUSED PLOT BATMAN! A character does something so fast/so dangerous that they end up in other cartoons? It's almost as if it didn't suck every single other time that story was used.
No, just no. I'm done.

Double Rainboom....
Pacing? Pfffft, audience just wants to see pony so give as much pony as possible at all times so who cares?
Also it looks like they forgot to write lines for T-Sparx at the end there, at least that seemed a little weird.
Good effort overall, probably the best of these fan animations not made by that dude who did the Picture Perfect Pony thing. You can tell it was a student project though since there was so much shit at the beginning designed to show off stuff he learned including that walkaround scene with the paper which just dragged on in silence.
I've already said in another thread how absolutely awful I thought Snowdrop was on literally every level so bah.

Double Rainboom wasn't so bad. Not great by any means, but not bad.
Can't really describe why or how, it just didn't strike me as, well, bad. I don't regret watching it, anyway.

Re: Snowdrop and Double Rainboom
The effort put in was phenomenal, and it was pretty damn good from a technical standpoint (although RBD's voice early on, when contrasted with Twilight's, had a very different level of recording quality, which was worrying). I'm not sure the plot was unoriginal (but I don't read many crossovers), but it was definitely lacking. All that said... it is at least comparable to one of the show's actual episodes. Not favorably, I'd say - it ran into some of the same issues the show does (running time problems) and handled them somewhat ungracefully - but I'd put it on a similar enough level that I can compare them. Except for the concept. I don't think there was an episode as conceptually bad as this one so far. Bad concept doesn't mean bad final product by any means, but this was not a great concept.
Them's muh thoughts.

Re: Snowdrop and Double Rainboom
Double Rainboom was pretty good. Not superb, but pretty darn good. It's considerably better than Snowdrop, anyways.
Animation was great. Voice acting was pretty good, but there was an initial issue with Rainbow's voice quality. Sounded like her VA was too far away from the mic/talking through a cardboard tube. That bugged me a little.
Storywise, well, it was a little lacking, and the dialogue was kinda hokey at times, but it was entertaining nonetheless. The Powerpuff Girls thing just came out of fucking nowhere. I spent about 2 minutes "WTF"-ing before I got my head on straight. It was entertaining, but I expected pony, not PPG. (Nothing against PPG, though. Loved that cartoon.)
The visual gags were pretty funny, but I feel they relied on them a bit too much/were over played/too long, especially at the part where Rainbow Dash was flying around Ponyville. I understand you gotta fill in stuff somehow, but they just really broke flow at times with their number of use and length.

Re: Snowdrop
Ok animation, decent VA, plot made me go blegh due to being a little too cliche with apparently every other pegasus colt and filly being arses, and the main trying too hard to be cute, crossing over to, what's that word that someone else used, oh yeah, moeblob. Still, a lot of work and effort.
Re: Rainboom
Haven't seen it yet. But just wanted to throw this up:
Sheesh, probably could've been better, but don't'cha all think that this is a little harsh?

@OneMoreDay
The guy who runs the site isn't actually a particularly nice or good or decent person, from what I can tell. /shrug But he's sort of right about this, and it's not hard to see why he's a bit bitter about it - the media industry has been consistently shafting writers these days, as though the actual story is something optional - maybe you don't hire an actual writer and have an exec write for you, because tacking on a barely-thought-out multiplayer mode feels like a better investment - and it's always been to the detriment of quality. See: films and video games.

Eh, maybe? I dunno, I wasn't paying much attention during that thing; I like the current iteration of the site just fine, and it doesn't break down too often, so good on him on that! But if so, it does seem a bit hypocritical.Valikdu wrote:Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:@OneMoreDay

Re: Snowdrop and Double Rainboom
Well, Double Rainboom...
Animation was great, no argument there, even if it wasn't 100% show accurate/up to the show's standards from time to time.
Voice-acting was cool (not counting the recording issues with RD's voice at the beginning, that's a technical issue). The dialogues were a bit wonky at times and so was the plot, but never reached intolerable levels for me.
They were trying a bit too hard to cram in a lot of references, but can't say that was completely unexpected from a fan project, and I still liked them even if they broke the pace a little, especially during the RD flying through Ponyville scene.
All in all I'd rate it as an average FiM episode, not among the best ones, but nowhere near Spike at Your Service either.
She was working on it since the magic kindergarten, so she knew what she wanted it to do. However, from her reaction one could presume that that finishing touch in form of an explosion and trollface smoke wasn't something she expected to happen. So she still knew what it was supposed to be originally, but didn't actually know if what she got was what she intedted to get. Therefore she didn't know what it was, only what it could be.
There you got it.
To his credit though, the changes aren't completely crappy, some of the stuff is good (and unlike youtube updates, actually useful). However both sites should realize that sudden drastic changes to interface (unless people are drastically whining about the current one [which some of them always are sadly]) are not a good thing and result only in confusing the user.

I don't think it's harsh at all. When you look at Double Rainboom as a whole, they promised a full length fanmade episode. What we got was an animated crossover fanfic, (and a poor one at that) that's basically screaming for Lauren Faust to tweet about it.
It absolutely could have benefitted from another writer, and probably other voice actors since it seems Kira Buckland has to be in literally every pony animation ever for building her portfolio.
E: Actually I'd probably go so far as to say that the creator of this probably exhausted all his stamina attempting to animate show-accurate stuff in the first act, which is why it's mostly full of janky overanimation that isn't fluid with the voice acting and the crossover into PPG style was an excuse to use a different, simpler style. Like I said before about Snowdrop, if you direct everything in order quality-drops are extremely noticeable to the viewer if you don't put a considerable amount of time into editing.

It cut out a lot of the scenes that dragged on for too long, or were unnecessary. Same goes for the memes and references.
I found this one much more enjoyable.
