X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Seeing how this has become less a discussion thread and more of my Let's Play Thread, changing it to reflect that. Going to keep the thread the same after this post, just adding some things to this first post.
Until I win, I repeat win, a game of X-Com: Enemy Unknown on Classic Difficulty with Ironman activated, I'm going to keep trying and posting the results of missions here in an After Actions Report style Let's Play.
I invite any and everybody to send me a PM if they want a soldier named after them or based on them, including those who was in the last game if they want to change something. And everybody can have more then one soldier if they want.
I ask for:
1. a two part name, for a first and last name,
2. single word nickname if you earn one,
3. preferred class (Heavy, Assault, Support, Sniper),
4.and a description I'll try to match within the game(this includes preferred armor color.
5. Also please note if you care which Sex and Nationality you want your character to be.
I'll do my best to match those but due to the random nature of soldier creation no promises.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Original post before Edit)
I picked the game up last week during the Steam Thanksgiving sale and starting playing it. After beating it on normal I decided to try a Classic run on Ironman.
But before I do I've decided to get a pool of names from people here.
I've gotten most of the guys in the FO:E RP but if anybody else wants a soldier named after them I'm more then willing to do it.
Just require a two part name.
Anything else such as appearance (race, hair, armor color), fighting class, and , if your character lives long enough to get one, a nick name are also open if you have a preference.
Gonna keep this up a week to get the names and all in before I start it. I promise to post screenshots of everybody and rank progressions as well. Also will do my best to give everybody an awesome death scene when/if you die.
If anybody else has the game or is interested in it, this could also be the discussion thread for it.

Classic on ironman? Living long? Does not compute.
Inco Orange, best serves support. Whatever you want for details. Or, if you wish, use an Alloy SHIV as Incoherent, and you can have Ketchup as one, too!
I think I'll do one of these, too! Won't have screenies or anything, though.

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Hey, there's been at least one person to win Ironman Impossible, there's a chance at least one person could live long enough in mine.
And I encourage you to do this. Half the fun in the game is making your own story as you play.
Like my most daring escape. It was a terror mission late in the game. Most of my troops was clearing a room of chryssalids, Mutons, and heavy floaters while two was in the next room where the stairs where at. For some reason I decided to have my second Assault stay downstairs and guard them as I sent my Sniper up to get the civies out of there.. and ended up revealing the Sectopod that was just chilling.
I was able to get one of the civilians out of there, but the rest where quickly killed off and my Sniper out in the open. When I got the chance I told him to get out of there, but that caused the Sectopod to get a reaction shot.
So the camera zoomed in to show how he jumped over the railing of the stairs as green-hot plasma bolts flew all around him because it missed.

Shameless bump to keep this up.
I have a good number of people but I would still love to have more. So far its:
Aonee: Aonee "Jimmie Rustler" [any last name]; White, short hair; non-sniper
Last: Last "Last" Last; what I picture he looks like; non-sniper
ScytoHarmony: Scyto "Villain" Harmony
Guarddogjr : Jack [Random last name]; Assault or Support
Robo: Sniper
Katarn : His real name; Brown hair; Assault or Support
IncoherentOrange: Inco Orange; Support
MrMagma: Mister Magma; what I picture him to look like; Assault or Support
Well... that's a full squad plus two that can be rotated out, but I would love to get more people.

I'd love to be a heavy or sniper. Identical to Orange.

I'll do the best I can.
That means, including some other friends, I'm up by three from the last list.

Two more days till I start up the Ironman run. I've been playing on Classic mode to prepare myself for it and I gotta say... it was nice knowing all of your characters. Even save scumming I've had to accept losses and it was by pure luck I got through the first Terror mission.

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Data Log Entry:
It happened... it finally happened. Alien contact. It was obvious they didn't come in peace either. God what happened to the people on the ground...
A response team was sent in to investigate. They found the remains of the German team that we had lost contact with earlier. The mission went... not as well as expected. Only one member of the team survived. Feeling as if he let his team down, he threw away his name and replaced it with another. Chaos. Fitting, as he's my new Heavy trooper.
Due to losing a bet and drawing the short straw, I've been put in charge of this.. X-Com project. Swear I've been set up for failure but I'll do the best I can. Next mission Chaos went out with three new recruits. Poor kids... No idea what they signed up for. Contracts are fucking insane. Hell, they give me the right to change their names and appearance. Even up to race changes... I'm going to avoid doing that.
I had them deployed to China as oppose to the incident in LA. We're based in the United States people, I can protect it just fine but we need to keep the other countries in mind! At least for now. The mission was successful. Chaos was wounded drawing fire away from the others, but he'll live. The others received promotions as well. I lucked up and got a full team.
I... may have gotten a bit drunk celebrating. When I came too, I had apparently renamed every one of them, and made them change armor colors. My Assault trooper is apparently now Mister Magma, and I gave him red armor. The Support got off somewhat easy. All I did was change his first name to Jack. I think Jack Jonson is a better name then Simon Jonson anyways. He now wears blue armor.
The Sniper got a full rename to Jonathan Reddings. Figuring he'd be better unseen I put him in dark gray armor.
Also I named a random rookie Scyto Harmony. No more whiskey on the job...
Unfortunately Chaos was still down when we got our next mission, so I had to replace him with a Russian rookie. I sent them to rescue a woman who was able to escape from the aliens. Things was going so well.. the Russian and Jack was moving down the middle of this park, Magma to the left and Jonathan to the right. They quickly dissipated an alien now known as a "Thin Man", and carefully moved forward.
Jonathan was order to hide next to a bus, having it deemed unsafe for him to stand on top of it despite the advantage it would bring him. Should have put him on the bus... Jonathan ended up spotting two Sectoids. He took a shot but was unable to kill it. He took a plasma bolt to the face, briefly blinding him. He took refuge inside the bus he was hiding behind, but in his blinded state went to the front where the aliens had a clear view of him through the windshield.
His death caused Jack and the rookie to panic and hunker down. Magma kept his cool though, and took down a Sectoid that he spotted on the other side. The other two quickly fell with some well placed shots and Magma took care of the last one we found sometime later.
Locating the woman, the team split up as to cover her way back to the Skyranger. Sure enough, a Thin Man appeared as she was making her way from cover to cover. Luckily, Magma was close enough to hit it with his shotgun as he took a reaction shot. Jack stayed close to the target as the rookie and Magma went for a sweep. Before getting her to safety another Thin Man dropped right where the Skyranger was.
Taking careful aim, the rookie took it down and opened up the way for the rest of them to make their way safely.
Jonathan will be missed, but he shall live on forever in our hearts and memories. By us killing every single last alien we encounter!

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Data Log Entry 2:
Satellites picked up an UFO over us. As in if the thing had landed it would have been right on top of the base. Luckily it flew off before we launched our Interceptor so the UFO couldn't track it back to base if we couldn't shoot it down. It seemed to have been a small one, as it went down with ease.
With Chaos healed up, I decided to team him up with more rookies and give the others a rest. To recover mentally from Jonathan's death. One of the rookies turned out to be Scyto Harmony. I need to keep an eye on him.
The Skyranger touched down and the team spread out to cover the area in thirds. One rookie and Chaos being able to cover the left, Chaos and Scyto keeping an eye down the middle towards the downed ship, and Scyto and the other rookie covering the right. Once again, the team took it nice and slow, ducking from cover to cover until we saw some Sectoids.
There was a brief firefight as the team went for cover and the aliens did the same. The aliens seem to be able to perform a neural link with each other and doing so gives them a boost in combat. Need to have the lab guys check into that...
One of the Sectoids fired at the team, hitting Scyto. Either out of anger or pain, he yelled out before firing back. Oddly enough he didn't shoot at the one that hit him, but rather the other one. He was able to kill it and I'm guessing the pcionic backlash killed the other.
The rest of the mission went by quickly and without anything to note other then the last alien encountered. We had killed off two more Sectoids when we approached the ship. Dropping the energy field acting as a door, the team reported seeing a floating crystal that turned into a humanoid shape being. It tried to run for cover but a hail of bullets from the whole team brought it down.
Injured, Scyto was told to stay behind in the next mission, as was the other rookies. Chaos refused R&R to go on it and I brought Magma, Jack, and our Russian Sniper for the mission. We was extracting another human again. A UN official with ties to the counsel that decides how much money I can use.
16 countries from all across the world.. I'm technically the last line of defense against the alien threat... and they treat me like a kid that hasn't earned his weekly allowance...
Mission was a success with no incident. Well... unless you count blowing up the statue in front of the museum as one. Chaos had his rocket-launcher and the aliens where hunkered down so it was deem acceptable to us. Only other thing of note was Jack's ability to keep cool as he once again escorted the target out of the area, and how the whole team was able to eliminate every alien that showed up quickly and efficiently after making sure the target was safe.
With the boys back at base, I had to go about setting research projects and the constructions of buildings. Jonathan aside, we've been lucky so far. But it won't hold out forever. I'm looking into better armor for the troops, and hopefully some better weapons. The lab wants us to capture a live alien at all cost, we need satellite up-links badly but we lack the power for anything right now.
Doesn't help I have to approve every single dig we do and once again the lack of funds from higher up. At least I have a satellite and Interceptors up in China. It's not much but it's better then nothing.

Data Entry 3:
We... suffered heavy losses today.
There was a few abductions sites. I sent the team to Germany since the backup base is stationed there. Also because it was in Munich and has a great beer hall.
Sent in Chaos, Jack, Eric the sniper who replaced Jonathan, and finally a new trooper. A young woman with the interesting name of Luna Knight. The team performed beautifully. Jack most of all, getting most of the kills. He did good... earn a promotion, earned the nickname Vita.
Team got back in time for our armor research to finish. Unfortunately we lacked the engineers to build them... and we could have used them.
After getting praised by the Counsel for a month well done, a UFO landed in China. I sent in the same team as last time, excepting some resistance but nothing they couldn't handle. Encounter our first Floater type aliens, but they didn't last long. A group of Thin Men showed up as well, but the team was able to kill all but one, who fled deeper into the forest.
Had the team approch the UFO and they encountered the floating crystal again, dubbing it "The Outsider". It too didn't last long against the team. Then I ordered them to search for the last Thin Man after making sure they had reloaded.
As it turned out, there was three more Thin Men out there. I thought the team could handle them... They should have been able to... but I guess the Thin Men were too agile for them.. and the fact they had the high ground...
The first to fall was Luna. Thin man got in a lucky shot and.. took her head clean off.
Chaos was next. His mighty gun fell silent as he was surrounded and picked off.
Jack was able to pull back, but not before taking plasma to the chest, as well as the Thin Man's poisonous spit. But he too died. He was able to take out one of the remaining Thin Men and wounded another, but one got in from the side and killed him.
Eric, may he rest in peace with the rest, did his best. He covered the others as best he could, but as stated earlier, they proved to agile. He kept fighting to the end, even after taking a shot to the leg and forced to drag himself behind a tree for cover. Out of round for his rifle, he drew his pistol and kept shooting till he was surrounded as well and finally killed.
Code Black declared, the Skyranger took off back to base as fast as it could. Unlike Jonathan who we could recover for a burial... they're still out there. God knows what those bastards are going to do with their bodies.
We still have Magma, Scyto, and other recruits.. but we lost good men today. I knew this job wasn't going to be easy, and I expected losses... but that doesn't make it any easier. It's all quiet now. Nothing has been detected on any of the scans, and the base is in mourning. I know I shouldn't, but I think I'm going to get drunk tonight. I.. I need something to help me...

You think I did that on purpose? That I got some of my best soldiers killed for kicks? I'll never be able to replace them. Even if they signed their lives away I still have an obligation to their families.

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Just so that everybody knows, No I have not given up on X-Com and my Ironman run.
While it's true I haven't played since I effectively got my ass handed to me and losing some of my top troops, that's not the only reason I haven't been playing. It's one of the main ones, but not the only. Skyrim has taken up a lot of my time, as well as a few other games. I can't say when I'll get back to X-Com, but I haven't given up yet.
Chaos, Jack, Luna and Eric will be avenged!

Okay, in a non serious note, finally got off my dead arse and decided to just brute force the picture thing. If memory serves Jack Johnson was Guard's guy (still sorry you died.) and Luna Knight's was Camo's (really really sorry she died.)
Johnathan was Robo's and for whatever reason the screen shots of him didn't load properly and thus was lost forever, and I'm still sorry he died.
Chaos and Eric were from two other friends I have on Steam and didn't care about pictures so no lost of not having those.
Jack Johnson
Scyto Harmony
Mr. Magma
Luna Knight

Think you could screen cap scenes from the battles in the future? I think that could be interesting.
I think it would add to the narration you've done so far.

I'll try. Most likely if I do remember it'll be screen caps of dead bodies and mission complete/failed screens.
As I keep saying I tried to get a picture of Robo's guy body inside the bus but the screen shot didn't save properly.

Ugh, my head. Feels like I've been out of it for a few months... no, just drinking away my sorrows from the death of my best men. But I must soldier on. The men depend on me, and the world depends on us.

Less then a week after Code Black, we picked up some alien abductions. Argentina, Germany, and Nigeria. I sent the team to Germany since they was offering cold hard cash. We probably could have done with the Sniper from Argentina or even the Engineers from Nigeria, but we're low on cash and it cost to get new recruits....
Why in the FUCK do I have to pay to be able to send out more then four people at a time?!? It's bad enough I had to build that "Officer Training School" to be able to do that, but I have to pay to "unlock" shit like that? It's not like we're picking people off the streets! We're getting these people from the best of the military and maybe some PMCs. We're based in the United States for crying out loud! Why don't we have SEAL Team Six or Delta Force helping us out?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm calm, I'm calm... I'm okay now.
Anyways.. we was able to stop the abductions in Germany. Only two Sectoids and four Floaters. Team was Magma, Scyto, Hollyn, and two rookies. Actually one of them was a squadie I think... Yes he was, our only support that was left. Was closing in on the Sectoids when the Floaters came out of nowhere and surrounded us. Luckily they was only able to get one shot off. Unfortunately it was at our Support and he was taken out.
In some good news the new Rookie proved himself, becoming a support himself, as did Scyto who somehow avoided promotion last mission he was on. Hollyn became an assault to better back up Magma.
Few days passed, got some research done. All seemed quiet... until the new reports started coming in. In what we're dubbing "Terror Attacks" the aliens came out in full force. It was world wide but it seemed like India was taking a brunt of it. Make sense seeing how they requested a satellite a week earlier but from out lack of Satellite uplink we couldn't launch it right then and there.
Almost immediately we found them, two floaters. They took a shot and almost killed the rookie. He would have been out of it for the rest of the fight had it not been for Scyto and a medkit.
Gonna have to keep these two together, seem to work well as a team, even if they both missed their target.
After that, the mission was uneventful. Team kept to cover, keeping the aliens from attacking back, and was able to save a good number of civvies. Far as we knew it was down to one Floater holding up in a building. Had the team surround the building, and Magma ran in to flank the creature. Once inside we found out that wasn't the only alien left. Everything happened too fast to get a good picture of them. Magma and Hollyn took out one of them, the rest of the team blasted the other to bits. Impressive since they only used battle rifles. Floater was next and the mission was over.
Rookie is out of commission for a while, but he earned a promotion to Sniper.
Got the Science team doing an autopsy on one of the creatures.
We're working on a new Uplink, and everything seems to be well. Now I have to decide if I still launch one of my three satellites for India or not. They offering cash money if I do.
Then I can either use the other two to cover the rest of Asia, the remainder of North America, cover South America completely, or get some coverage in Africa. Or spread them out.

Data Log Entry #5
Didn't take too long before we picked up another UFO. We hadn't seen this one before and it was quite larger then the previous ones we've encountered.
Sent up our Interceptor I had equipped with the Phoenix Cannon, with the second in reserved in case we had to pull the first one back and engaged at a longer range. It took some hits but brought the bastard down.
Remembering the last time we attacked a UFO, the team was mostly vets with one rookie. Magma, Hollyn, Scyto, and Aonee, and a recruit from China. Good kid, kept his head the whole mission.
Kept the team in close formation, sticking to the best cover available and never had them alone. Nearly instantly encountered two Sectoids but they proved not to be much of a problem. Scyto took out both. One as it showed up, the other after a brief fire fight. That rookie... well he tried but his aim could use some work.
Three floaters showed up, and Scyto once again took one down instantly. Rookie was able to hit one but wasn't a killing shot, so it was up to Magma and Hollyn getting in close to finish the job. Aonee watched the flanks.
As the team entered the ship it became apparently it was merely a larger version of what we figure are scouts, and we had entered it from the rear. Team surrounded what we've been figuring was the cockpit or command center and... nothing.
Split the team, Aonee and the rookie to the left, the others on the right. Nothing on the right but an intact power source, that's gonna come in handy later. On the left however was our Outsider friend.
Took a team effort to bring it down, with the Rookie doing the most damage and Hollyn finishing it off with her pistol.
Rest of the mission was the team running around the inside of the ship as they kept hearing sounds from somewhere in there. Turns out there was two Thin Men on top of the damn thing. They took off and wounded the rookie and Aonee, with Hollyn taking both of them down. With that the mission was over, Rookie was promoted and we got some more alloys to work with.
Got back to base and was barely able to finally build that arc thrower the Science departments been harping me about and some more armor before we got abductions reports. Between Mexico, Brazil and France, I thought it best to keep our southern neighbor happy, as Europe as a whole is in good shape and honestly... we could lose South America if push comes to shove.
With Aonee and our new Heavy down, had to bring in two more rookies. Since Magma is our most experience and quite frankly toughest soldier, gave him the arc thrower. Capturing a live alien seems to be the next big step for us.
Team landed right outside of a gas station right next to a fast food restaurant. Didn't like them taking cover behind the pumps but sometimes you can't help it. Once again had the team take it nice and slow. Discovered two Sectoids again, and once again Scyto was dead-eye, killing one of them. Hollyn wounded the other as Magma got in close.
Next few minutes were tense, time stood still as the arc thrower was deployed. But it worked.
Patrolled the area to discover two Floaters. Magma wasn't able to get close enough to stun either, Hollyn was wounded after killing one and Magma took care of the other as Scyto healed her back up. The two rookies found two more Sectoids. Not wanting to get into prolong combat, just had one chunk her grenade, taking out both aliens.
Got back to base where we interrogated the Sectoid. Seems like the next step is to capture an Outsider according to the good doctor. It also seems the sectoid had a good understanding of beam technology, helping us speed up our own research. Rather pleased with the results.
Got the satellite uplink up as well, launching the one India requested. Also launched one in Nigeria and Brazil. Probably should have sent the last one to Egypt or South Africa... hell even France, but too late now.
As the month ended the Council sent their report to us. They seem pleased for now.
As it currently stands, the main thing holding us back is alloys for weapons and armor, and power for the base. Building two more satellites despite not having any more uplinks, as well as a Foundry, and an extra power generator to hopefully tie us over till I get to the projected steam vents for the thermopower veritiy.
We have a request for four laser rifles in exchange for Engineers from China, but I was only able to build four with what alloys we had and I'm not about to give away our top grade equipment if it means we won't have any for ourselves.

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Data Log Entry #6
Things where going too good. I should have known that. Let my guard down... again.
After getting all the Interceptors moved around and ordering new ones, I thought I'd make sure at least one of the two covering each continent had the phoenix cannon. That was a mistake because in the down time a UFO showed up above Brazil and we didn't have anything to send after it. It got away before we could get the ship ready.
Few days later there was another contact. The other one was bigger than the last ship, but this thing was massive. Too massive. Plane went down before we could even get close. Our satellite was destroyed soon afterwards.
Both Argentina and Brazil went on high alert and nearly pulled out of the project. Even though I said we could lose them, I'd rather not have a giant hole in our defense.
Soon after there was another group of abduction reports, Canada, Australasia, and France. Other than Africa and obviously South America, everybody else are relatively calm, with the exception of France, who was also offering money that we need.
Team landed, spread out, and encountered Floaters. Of the original three, two of them went down easily. Problem came when we tried to capture the last one. Despite being weakened, the first attempt failed. And Magma suffered for it. Luckily the next attempt succeeded, but just barely.
Scyto healed him up as best he could as the others advanced. As we checked the offices and the storage warehouse next to it a few more Floaters flew in only to be taken out by our Heavy and Sniper. Ended up on the other side of the building from where we landed, encountering Thin Men.
Due to being out of stun charges, they had to be killed. More trouble then it seemed as the rookie was nearly taken down. All the while our sniper kept reporting more sounds from where he was left at.
Team circled around the outside of the building only to encounter a new alien type.
They hit hard and fast, come equipped with their own versions of grenades, and boy are they ugly. Scyto was nearly killed, Magma took more of a beating, but we got them.
Back at base we interrogated the Floater. Didn't get any new information about the alien's plans than the Sectoid from before, but we did glean some information to help improve our armor. We also autopsied the new alien. Big, mean, ugly, tough was pretty much what they got from it as well. And something about mini-reload servos built into our armor. Might be worth looking into later.
UFO showed up over China. Only a small scout and it was quickly shot down. Thought it would be a good time to capture that Outsider but didn't want to risk Hollyn or Aonee, the only experienced troops not wounded. So the Arc Thrower was given to a rookie named Murphy.
Murphy. We almost deserved what happened after that decision.
So, Hollyn, Aonee, Murphy, our Chinese Heavy, and two rookies went to try to capture the Outsider. What happened was the instantaneous death of Murphy by us running into what the men have dubbed Mutons, thus eliminating the possibility of capturing anything, the wounding of both Aonee and Hollyn, with Hollyn only surviving two volleys of plasma directly to her face and body by luck and the medkit Aonee carried. It should be noted that while a Support, Aonee is not yet as good a medic as Scyto currently is.
Other then the Mutons all that survived the crash was two Floaters that the rookies took care of and the Outsider which died after the Heavy fired in it's direction. The team got back and all of us received a chewing out for not capturing the Outsider.
We got a new satellite uplink up and I launched our two satellites over South America. In return for that, other then the assigned monthy payments and extra scientist and engineer, they said they'll help us with , as they put it, "more unsavory work". Meaning the interrogations and autopsies. I hope I don't regret keeping them happy rather then putting those satellites elsewhere.
A few days passed, enough for Aonee and Magma to get out of the infermary and in time for the Council to send us a request. They had discovered the aliens planting a bomb in Canada. One that could take out the entire city it's planted in. So, sent the team out, Magma as squad captain, Aonee as second in command, an up and coming assault, a young support, the sniper, and a rookie.
Touching down in the train yard the bomb was at, we discovered the aliens had started the countdown and there was power nodes powering the bomb. Had the team split but keep an even distance looking for nodes and the bomb. Naturally it wouldn't be as easy as finding the bomb and shutting it down, oh no. Thin Men where crawling all over the place. They seemed to love Magma, sending a steady stream of plasma and poison his way. To the point everybody else had free reign on them.
Using this against them, Magma took the liberty of stunning one of the bastards. Aonee got next to Magma as quick as he could and healed him up as best he could. But as we neared the bomb Magma took another volley of plasma. And despite being closer to the bomb, Magma had to let the other assault shut it down.
What followed was what can only be described as a cluster. Our sniper had made it to the top of a train car, giving him free reign and site, but putting him at a cover disadvantage as a group of Thin Men dropped in from nowhere. Aonee and the rookie missed their target, as did the other assault. Sniper took out one as soon as they dropped in and another with his next shot. Our support also took one out that was flanking her.
Then Magma... severely wounded though he was, made an attempt to give the others an opening. Leaving the boxcar I ordered him to take shelter in, his so called Lightning Reflexes could only go so far. As he dodged the plasma coming from in front of him, he missed the guy above him as well.
Seeing the death of the Captain caused the rookie to panic, the Thin Men took pot shots at Stewart, leaving him in a cloud of poison and wounded himself. He was dead before he had a chance. The others on the other hand got their act together. All three of them putting the last three Thin Men down with perfect shots. If only they could have done that before...
As the team makes their way back I can't help but look at this wall. We've barely been at this for three months. Well look at that... Murphy died the day before my birthday. How fitting I had to write to her parents the next day.

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
Sorry guys, no story post this time.
The next mission was a Total Party Kill, followed by another Total Party Kill, followed by me selling everything I had as countries left and UFO shot down my satellites.
In the end, my last mission before the end of the month was a Terror Mission... which ended with a Total Party Kill because at that point there was nothing but Rookies. They went out like champs though. Yeah half of them panicked the whole time but they did go down fighting before they died.
Then the game just said "Yeah you're done, hope you had fun."
I'll try this again in a few weeks, everybody is welcome throw their names in the hat as well as desired soldier type. Also, if there's anybody else who wants to do this I recommend it. It was fun while it lasted and I wouldn't mind seeing how everybody else does.
Speaking of which, I have a free copy of X-Com for Steam if anybody wants it.

Not sure who all actually pays attention to this thread anymore, but I've edited the first post.
Yes I am going to attempt the Ironman run on Classic again, and will till I beat the game on it. And once again I'm asking everybody for names and all so I can at least feel bad when I they get killed.
Edit: The free copy has been claimed.

So, I've been playing through XCOM on Easy. It's been going well... but the game recently decided to stop letting me have fun.
Yea... I kinda reloaded my save after that.

Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown Let's Play
So, it was an alien abduction, I dispatched the team to... Canada? I think, since panic was high there and it would give me engies. Can always use more engies. Anyway, it was going well, my team was advancing, when we came across our first Tangos. Mutons, of course. And another... and another... Seriously, about three teams of Mutons appeared. Then I realized I had set down in a parking lot. I moved everyone to cover and got ready for a fight, when suddenly a new enemy appeared- a Cyberdisc. I figured it wouldn't be too big of a thread, it was just a little floating disc, more in common with the turret bots around it than anything else. So imagine my surprise when it lobs a grenade at my two assaults and heavy taking cover behind the same car. Both assaults died, and my heavy just barely made it out. It didn't get much better from there, I had my team fall back as more cars caught on fire. The heavy went down when I had him fall back while suppressed-first time anyone got shot running out of suppression, no less. The first support fell after a new squad of Mutons began flanking, the second falling to the same one after some advancements. By that time, only one was left- easy enough pickings for the sniper, but still.

Yeah, Cyberdisk are up there with Chryssalids and Sectopods on the "Oh Fuck" meter.
Granted it was due to my getting most of my remaining best troops killed because of a bad decision with a rocket that I had to field Rookies when the game started throwing Mutons at me, but the following three missions I threw those Rookies into before the end had a Cyberdisk in each one.
Pretty sure the Cyberdisk was the last enemy on the map, but with a Squadie Heavy and Sniper, plus a Rookie being all that was left of the team and nobody with a laser weapon, not good.
The next mission, which was nothing but Rookies, was able to bring the Cyberdisk down, but it also softened the group up enough for the Mutons to steamroll them.
Last mission was a Terror Mission, where there was two Cyberdisk and at least 9 Chryssalids. Poor bastards never stood a chance.
What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Cyberdisk suck. If the grenade they toss wasn't enough, it's that attack so fondly named "Death Blossom."
Not to mention they explode on death, which I have lost troops to.

Yup. By the way, have you tried out multiplayer yet? I'm interested to see what it's like.

Not yet. I know Katarn was looking for somebody to play against but we're not online at the same time it seems.
Though it seems like it's just like the main game, just we'll be trying to kill each other and we'll have access to every alien as well. Main problem being if you want a Ranked match or not. Ranked matches comes with a pool of points to build a team with and if you go over then you can't play ranked.
And before you ask I can't play now. Thursday night at the earliest if I'm lucky and this laptop of my is so crappy that Poker Night at The Inventory is slow and laggy, and that's a glorified online Poker game.
