((Hmmm...maybe you guys can help me out a bit with this one, or at least offer some insight. This is my assignment - answer one of these questions in two paragraphs:

A. Do hate speech/racist speech web sites merit First Amendment protection? What level of protection? What is hate speech? Why or why shouldn't they be protected like other sites?
B. Do you think that anonymity can be protected in cyberspace? Can it be protected? Should we consider using a verifiable Internet identity similar to a driver's license or a passport?

((Those are tricky questions, um let me see what I can come up with. Well as far as B. goes, I'd think you could, but that really seems more up to the user if they want to give out that information or not. When it comes to the Passport and drivers license part. I'm not really sure what it's asking. Is it asking if it should be used to help ID that person IRL or on the internet? If it's the former, then I say no because a lot of people use the internet so they don't have to worry about stuff coming back to bite them(Take, Somber for example, if he had to give his internet handle to his superiors, he might get in trouble for writing PH if it goes against certain things.) I hope this helps you out Robo.))

((Yeah, I've been leaning towards answering B, because it's something I've given a lot more thought about in the past.

I question whether or not anonymity on the internet will be more easily retained in the future. It largely depends on the choices of the user, how much information they are willing to give out to companies and programs, as well as increasing external forces from identity thieves, and spyware.

Of particular instance, I recall someone from my gaming clan showing us this one website, and it had a fair amount of information on lots of people I knew, my parents, and even myself (although for whatever reason, they listed my gender as "female" ). It was unnerving to say the least. I have no idea how they got it.

I personally can't push away the idea that it'll disappear altogether. And after that, it might lead to a social change altogether.

In a positive, idealized life, we might end up more like the Betazoid race from Star Trek (yes, silly, I know). Because they have telepathy, they have no way to hide secrets from each other, and are socially more open. We could have something akin to that. I mean, anything not on paper or data could still be kept secret in the mind, but other things would be more difficult to hide.

However, we're still very human, and I'm still a misanthrope, so as much as I'd love it to happen, I don't see it ending that way. Everyone will probably become paranoid or something and then we'll all start killing each other.))

((Well, I know some companies do use spyware in order to get information on their customers so they can try to appeal to them more so that might be how that site got the information.(Gator. for example, made deals with businesses to track down what a user likes as well as other information to sell to said companies). But yeah, you have a point about the end game if the anonymity is breached like that. There as a possibility, that after the mass paranoia dies down a bit. Sociaty could just get to the point to where it doesn't care and people become more open, even if there is only a slim chance of that happening, it still could.))

((For my sociology course we were told to violate a social norm and take note of peoples reactions. This is what I did. I went to Mcdonalds, got some cheap food, then I went to Burger King, and gave it to the person that gave me the drink I ordered! She almost refused to take the bag, like it smelled of poo or something.))

Did you give the McDonald's food to a Burger King employee while behind the counter, or just some random person? either way the social norm experiments can be fun, until someone gets hurt.(Funnily enough that actually happened to someone in my sociology class while they were doing that.) Have you tried to break any other norms? A fun one is to get closer to a person as you talk to them.))

((I've worked in McD's..here, in Ukraine. If rules are all the same cross-world and BK's have similar, employee simply can't have anything from you. In our country folks even leaves tip after they eat, so those, who looks over hall can have some change..point is..there is a reason why uniform don't have any pockets, employees are forbidden to accept anything from costumers.))

And while you're leaning more towards B. Robo, technically the First Amendment protects you from saying/post anything you want. That said it doesn't really protect you of actions being taken against you after you said it. Especially if what is said/written is intended on causing violence or generally disturbing the peace.

At least that's the gist of what I've been learning in my Introduction to Mass Media class where the professor keeps trying to hammer it in that we can say and write anything, but have to be ready to accept the consequences that may arise afterwards.))

Also, found out that my sociology teacher was told he gets to teach his new class next semester. It's a soc. class where the students will study the culture of gamers, behavior and society in online gaming, and how gaming has changed the way humans behave and socialize with one another...kinda tempted to take it.))
