Here's a good example of the good stuff. The opening to this song is pretty fantastic, very catchy and fun. True, the production and sound and whatnot isn't totally original and fantastic, but not every band can be Celtic Frost. (Heck, even Celtic Frost can't be Celtic Frost all the time.) So, yeah, the guitars - when they're doing cool things, which is unfortunately not as frequent as I'd like - are pretty great.

Now, on the other hand, we've got the scourge of melodic death metal: overbearing keyboards. It's really just a taste preference, but I prefer when keyboards are very much in the background. When they're being used for atmosphere rather than as a central part of the song. (For the record, not really a fan of Burzum) (also for the record, this is just for melodeath - Dream Theater can keyboard all it wants)

Drumming's fine - more inventive than a lot of metal, and it's got speed to boot. Vocals are great, so long as they're not clean - some of their albums have really bad clean singing from time to time, which is unfortunate. The only other problem I really have is that their "classic" album, The Gallery, has enough issues with songwriting that even I noticed them. There's no sense of flow to the compositions, and the production basically sounds like old Opeth. It's a bit grating.

So, yeah. I was looking for another Insomnium, remembered that Dark Tranquillity was a very early melodeath band, remembered that their lead singer did guest vocals on Weather The Storm (which I loved, and is also that rare breed of death metal song that is positive and defiantly hopeful), so I tried out some of their work. And it's not bad. Plenty of great songs, but it's not like with Insomium where I can more or less say I enjoy every single album.

I love this song, but it no longer makes me thing of NMM. Instead, because it somehow managed to play on my playlist EVERY SINGLE TIME Red Eye showed up while I read FO:E, my brain now makes it his theme song (probably because of the voice, and yes, this is the voice I picture him with every time I read a line from him. And yes, I also realize the words don't match his plans at all, but it still got stuck in my head as him somehow using eternal night as his metaphor for being the new God of equestria after his plans go through, so meh).
