The fic is Snow and Shadows, a tale of what "really" happened during the tale of Hearth's Warming, and the era of the three tribes. It has an awesome little side-story with Twilight and Rainbow going on a the same time, too.

I reccomend you read its even MORE awesome prequel, Of Skies Long Forgotten, which tells the tale of how Commander Hurricane ascended to power, and the history of the Pegasi. It's not necessary to read first, but it sets a lot of the lore used in Snow and Shadows. And I repeat, it is awesome.

Sounds good, when it comes to Hearth's Warming tale I really liked The Final Quest of Star Swirl the Bearded, these seem (quite) a bit darker, will add it to my already sizeable list.
