S5 Episode 01~02 - Cutie Markless Part 1/2 [Discussion]

My first time posting a episode thread...
It might seem a bit early to post, but since there are only several days left till the episode airs. I'm thinking that we could all share our opinion on what we will think will happen in the Premiere and Season 5 in general. From what I've seen so far, Season 5 is going to be HUGE! Something very big is going to happen this year, I'm very sure of it...

Not a bad start. I can see some kinds of patterns developing.

- It seemed like some of that group that helped the Mane Six shared some of their personality traits and elemental qualities. I kept wondering towards the end if Starlight would see the error in her ways and become an actual leader. But, that didn't happen and she got away. Now I'm wondering if she'll become a recurring villain.
As far as that goes, well, she's not exactly the greatest of villains (at least she's better than Sombra).
I wonder where their next destination is.

Well, there goes the first season of Korra summed up in just two episodes.
I wish instead of the map sending them somewhere everytime they get back (like I assume it will) that they'd go on on a season-long friendship mission across Equestria (and beyond?). Just make it more continuous.

For the most part, I thought that was a great start. An interesting concept, everything wasn't handled solely by Twilight, or even the Mane Six, and they've introduced a way of setting up arbitrary new action episodes. I'm concerned that this could lead to a season too heavy on Mane Six episodes, and I could have done without the "oh and fuck Spike" at both the beginning and end, but that's par for the course. And from another perspective, I worry that kids could internalize the message that forcing everyone to be the same is bad could be internalized as equality is bad, or that those who advocate equality in whatever sense are liars or want what the antagonist did.

This is the second Season that I've watched with the fandom and it looks like it's going to be a heck of a season ^^
A plot line is already established, with the magical artifacts and Starlight Glimmer. I'm sure we'll see more of her sometime later this year =D

Hopefully with a backstory or an established motive. She wasn't all that exciting of a villain, but she's got potential for the long term.

Artifacts? Like the staff? Starlight admitted the Staff of Sameness was a fake. Or rather "just a piece of wood I found in the desert". Twilight hadn't even heard of there being a ninth. I don't think any of the eight artifacts are going to be making an appearance.

A bit of a read, so hiding in spoilers

- I actually really liked Starlight as a villain. She isn't nearly as powerful as say Discord or Tirek, but she is smart. I'm more curious as to why she was collecting cutie marks, as she seemed to have some major plan that wasn't explained. We know she has a fixation on control, and may even see herself in power as a good thing for all and not just herself, but otherwise there isn't a ton we know.
As for the 'free town four', I hope we get to see them in the future. Maybe we'll see the town under a new 'mayor' in a future episode?
The eight magical artifacts hopefully lead to something. Hopefully we'd see them throughout the season rather then all eight thrown into the last two episodes of the season. And notably, Twilight said none were a staff, so what could they be? A mirror, an amulet, a sword, a ball/orb, these all seem like possible objects to me.
The ponies in the village don't seem to recognize Twilight, so that raises the question, how long has this village been around? Its possible no cutie mark does mess with their memories, but that doesn't seem to really be the case.
Lastly, not really important, but did anyone else notice Diamond Mint in the village at the very end? This wouldn't normally concern me since she is essentially just a background pony that is commonly used, but she is usually associated with Canterlot and high society events, with few exceptions, but this easily could just be me looking way too far into a background pony.

So, here's a thought:
On the surface, Starlight's ideaology seems potentially a bit excessive for show Equestria; there's enough strife there to make it not devoid of applications, but whether there's really enough to warrant her methods is down to a matter of interpretation (particularly given the power loss, though what we saw may still have been a work in progress).
However, on reflection, there's one rather clear example she could have drawn inspiration from:
"You can't have a nightmare / If you never dream"
Now, what famous historical figure is associated both with great strife and suffering born from the envy of another's talent and with nightmares? I doubt that there's some sort of actual magical connection, but I'd not be surprised if it was one of the things Starlight had in mind when putting things together.

So, if Starlight does happen to be Celestia's former student, check out her track record.
Assuming she played a role in raising or teaching Luna, out of her students we know of, one became a demon intent on taking over the world and bringing eternal night, one became a cult leader obsessed with "equality" and surface cordiality over real friendship, one fled to another world where she became a demon intent on taking over the world, and Twilight was woefully unprepared to actually make friends and to the EoH deal with Nightmare Moon. I think that Celestia might not be a very good teacher, mentor, or role model.
